The Brown Scapular of Our Lady of Mount Carmel

Clothed in Our Lady's Mantle — Consecrated to Her Immaculate Heart

For centuries, Catholics have worn the Brown Scapular of Our Lady of Mount Carmel as a sign of consecration to the Blessed Virgin Mary, placing themselves beneath her maternal mantle and entrusting themselves to her protection. More than a devotional object, the Scapular is a daily reminder of our commitment to follow Jesus Christ under the guidance of His Blessed Mother. At Fatima, Our Lady appeared under the title of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, reminding us of this beautiful devotion and its place in the spiritual life.

Our Lady of Mount Carmel at Fatima

On October 13, 1917, as the great crowd witnessed the Miracle of the Sun, the three shepherd children beheld a series of heavenly visions. First, St. Joseph appeared with the Child Jesus, blessing the world, with Our Lady of the Rosary beside them. Next came Our Lord and Our Lady of Sorrows. Finally, Sister Lúcia saw the Blessed Virgin Mary under the appearance of Our Lady of Mount Carmel.

Sister Lúcia later explained that Our Lady held the Brown Scapular in this final vision as an invitation for the faithful to wear it.

The Rosary and the Brown Scapular beautifully complement one another. Through the Rosary, we turn daily to Our Lady in prayer and contemplate the mysteries of the life of Christ. Through the Scapular, we carry a constant reminder that we belong to her and desire to live under her guidance.

Together, these devotions help us respond to Our Lady's requests at Fatima and grow in love for her Divine Son.

The Rosary and the Scapular are inseparable.

Our Lady's Promise to St. Simon Stock

The Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to St. Simon Stock in the thirteenth century and entrusted to him the Brown Scapular as a sign of her special protection.

The traditional promise associated with this devotion is:

"Whoever dies clothed in this scapular shall not suffer eternal fire." — Our Lady of Mount Carmel

This remarkable promise has inspired generations of Catholics to seek Our Lady's help, especially at the hour of death.

The Scapular, however, is not a magical charm or an automatic guarantee of salvation. It is a sign of our commitment to live as faithful disciples of Jesus Christ, with confidence in the maternal intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

To wear the Scapular faithfully is to entrust ourselves to Our Lady, striving to imitate her virtues, remain in God's grace, receive the sacraments, and persevere in prayer and charity.

Consecration to The Immaculate Heart

The Brown Scapular is especially meaningful for those who wish to live the message of Fatima. Pope St. John Paul II taught that the Scapular is an expression of Consecration to Mary's Immaculate Heart. He himself wore the Brown Scapular throughout his life.

By wearing it, we place ourselves beneath Our Lady's mantle and renew our desire to belong entirely to Jesus through Mary.

As members of Our Lady's Blue Army, we are encouraged to:

  • Offer the sacrifices of our daily duties in a spirit of reparation.

  • Pray at least five decades of the Holy Rosary each day.

  • Wear the Brown Scapular as a sign of Consecration to Mary's Immaculate Heart.

  • Practice the Five First Saturdays devotion.

These simple commitments help us answer Our Lady's call to prayer, sacrifice, and reparation for the conversion of sinners and the salvation of souls.

Place Yourself Beneath Our Lady's Mantle

Our Lady came to Fatima as a loving Mother, calling her children to prayer, penance, and conversion. Through the Brown Scapular, we are reminded of her maternal protection and our desire to belong entirely to Jesus through Mary.

If you do not yet wear the Brown Scapular, we encourage you to embrace this beautiful devotion and seek enrollment. If you already wear it, renew your consecration to Our Lady's Immaculate Heart and strive each day to live it more faithfully.

Our Lady of Mount Carmel, pray for us!

How to Begin Wearing the Brown Scapular

1. Obtain a Brown Scapular.

The traditional Scapular consists of two small pieces of brown cloth connected by cords, with one piece resting over the chest and the other over the back.

2. Ask to be invested in the Brown Scapular.

Ask a priest about receiving the blessing and formal enrollment in the Brown Scapular. This beautiful ceremony expresses your desire to share in the spiritual life of the Carmelite family and place yourself under Our Lady's protection. Contact us if you need assistance finding a priest to enroll you.

3. Wear it faithfully.

The Scapular is intended to be worn continuously as a reminder of your devotion and commitment. If your Scapular becomes worn out, it may be replaced without repeating your enrollment.

4. Live your consecration.

Seek to grow in holiness through daily prayer, the Holy Rosary, frequent reception of the sacraments, devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary, and fidelity to the duties of your state in life.
